Whaling, Ward, 1923-
Oral history interview with Ward Whaling, 1999 April-May.
Ward Whaling came to Caltech in 1949 to join the research group in nuclear physics at the W. K. Kellogg Laboratory. In this interview, Whaling discusses: work on measurement of nuclear masses; reminiscences of Charles and Thomas Lauritsen, William Fowler, C. Barnes, Alvin Tollestrup, Fay Ajzenberg-Selove, Fred Hoyle, Robert Christy, Murray Gell-Mann, Richard Feynman, physics chairman Robert Bacher; social and recreational activities at Caltech over 50 year span. There is an extensive discussion of the early days of astrophysics and nucleosynthesis at Caltech. The interview concludes with a discussion of Whaling's work on the scanning interferometer for the McMath solar telescope at Kitt Peak to measure atomic branching ratios.
Ph.D., physics (Rice University, 1947). Professor of Physics, California Institute of Technology, 1949-1993.
