The Committee was organized on July 19th, 1954; until 1963 it stayed under the supervision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; from 1963-1968 it was ruled by the Section for the Physical Sciences, during the period 1969-1982 it was under the authority of the Section for the Earth Sciences. Since 1982 it has been under joint authority of the Section for the Earth Sciences and the Section for Physical Sciences of ehe Presidium of the Academy of Science of the USSR (MGK). Its chairman were: G. A. Gamburtzev (1954); I. P.Bardin (1955-1959); V. V. Blousov (1960).
