Discusses work as the auroral scientist under Finn Ronne in Antarctica during the first year of the IGY, and the difficulties he had with Ronne; building of seven spectrographs for the IGY Antarctic bases; construction of the auroral tower where he did his research; began research on micro-meteorites in the snow; went on to study solar eclipses.
