Dr. Akasofu was born in central Japan in 1930. Akasofu arrived at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) in 1957 as a graduate student under Dr. Sydney Chapman. Akasofu's dissertation research was based on imagery from the All-Sky Cameras, which was a major IGY project. He is well known in the field of Auroral physics for his work in geomagnetic storms, finding the power source for the Aurora, and determining the shape of the Auroral ring. He served as Director of the UAF Geophysical Institute from 1986 to 1999. In 1989, he initiated creation of the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at UAF.
