Bateman, Harry, 1882-1946.
Harry Bateman papers, 1906-1947.
The collection includes manuscripts on binomial coefficients, notes on integrals, related material and correspondence (including Lorentz, E. T. Bell); and notebooks. Also included are one-half box of lantern slides related to equipment and engineering, and lecture notes taken by Edmund Pinney on six courses taught by Bateman from 1938-1942. Note that there are twenty-one notebooks given by Dr. Pinney via Dr. Joseph Zund.
Mathematical physicist; Professor of Physics and Aeronautics, California Institute of Technology, 1911-1946. Bateman's distinguished career as a mathematician included the application of integral equation theory to the propagation of earthquake waves, the mathematical study of electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, dynamics and elasticity, and the problem of numerical computation. Perhaps his best work centered around the development of the properties of special functions and the solution of the most important equations of mathematical physics. His work in fluid mechanics was a basic factor in airplane design.
