Barish, B.C. (Barry Clark), 1936-
Oral history interview with Barry C. Barish, 1998 May-June.
In this interview, Barry Barish discusses: his work on the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory cyclotron and bevatron; meeting Alvin Tollestrup at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech); his work at Brookhaven National Laboratory and at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) with Henry Kendall, Richard Taylor, and Jerome Friedman; proposing neutrino work at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) with Frank Sciulli; the history of magnetic monopoles and his work on monopoles at Caltech; the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) and the involvement of Samuel C. C. Ting. Barish also discusses the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project, including the experiments of Joseph Weber, the work of Ronald Drever and Rochus E. (Robbie) Vogt, taking over from Vogt, and technical difficulties with LIGO. The interview concludes with recollections of Richard Feynman and a discussion of the influence of Tollestrup and Taylor.
