The collection consists of Herbert Friedman's personal correspondence with the largest file with Edward O. Hulburt; his research material from his work at the Navy Research Laboratory; his articles for journals magazines and his book manuscripts for The Amazing Universe, The Sun and Earth and The Astronomer's Universe; his work at the Naval Research Laboratory with Talbot A. Chubb and George R. Carruthers; the patents he applied for; works by some of his coworkers including Chubb, Carruthers, Irving Blifford and Riccardo Giacconi; his work with organizations such as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Philosophical Society, the Cosmos Club, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Aeronautics and Space Administraton and the Naval Research Council; certificates and awards he received; biographical and person information; sets of photographs and audio visual material.
A native of Brooklyn, Herbert Friedman went to Brooklyn College (BS, 1936) and Johns Hopkins University (PhD, 1940) before accepting a position with the Naval Research Laboratory. A space scientist, Friedman's interests ranged from applied x-ray spectroscopy early in his career to solar physics, upper atmospheric physics and x-ray astronomy. He retired from NRL in 1980, but continued as consultant and emeritus until his death in 2000.
