Robert William Young papers, 1920-2002.
The accession consists of the correspondence, memorandum, notes and other personal papers of physicist Robert William Young, an acoustics expert. The papers document his work as a physicist at the University of California Division of War Research (UCDWR) in San Diego 1942-1946, the Marine Physical Laboratory 1946, and the Naval Electronics Laboratory 1946-1967 where he worked on problems of underwater sound related to submarine warfare. The papers include a series of technical reports on wartime navy acoustics research issued by the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). These include reports authored by Young and his colleagues in the Listening Section of the UCDWR. They also include reports issued by Columbia University Division of War Research (CUDWR), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and other NDRC sections. This series includes some notes, correspondence and memoranda concerning the reports, and particularly the UCDWR Listening Section. The collection includes Youngs wartime photo album, consisting of images taken between 1941 and 1945 in San Diego. Most of the photographs in the album document a UCDWR picnic held at the beach below SIO around the summer of 1942. The papers also document his work as an acoustics consultant working on assessment of environmental sound, music, and building acoustics, including files on Miramar. The accession includes material documenting his participation in professional associations and work as a U.S. representative at International standards meetings related to acoustics.
