F. Curtis Michel Scientist-Astronaut papers, 1951-1981 (bulk 1963-1974).
The collection includes both Michel's academic papers and his National Aeronautics and Space Admin. (NASA) papers. It is comprised of correspondence, technical and training manuals, course notes, scholarly publications, photographs, and a great variety of ephemera relating to his work in the space program. It provides a good overview of the contributions from the academic community to NASA's various endeavors, as well as a glimple into the administrtive working of NASA and the tensions between various groups involved with the space program. Some of the topics covered include: his work as a graduate student at Caltech: correspondence with officials at NASA regarding his interest in and application to the Scientist-Astronaut Program, and later his resignation; his experiences with NASA; the Astronaut Training and Familiarization program; the Apollo and Gemini Programs, the Surveyor program, and the space station.
