The collection primarily reflects Iselin's scientific interests and multifaceted involvement in the international oceanographic community through writing, lecturing, and in an advisory capacity as Physical Oceanographer for the Woods Hole Institution. The files contain manuscripts, letters, school books, log books, memorandae, lectures, speeches, reprinted articles, magazine clippings, photographs, charts, reports, and data.
Physical Oceanographer. Columbus O'Donnell Iselin assumed the directorship of WHOI in 1940. He had been an assistant to Henry Bigelow and master of R/V Atlantis, a vessel he helped to design. He had been a physical oceanographer at WHOI from 1932 to 1940, and an Associate Professor of Oceanography at Harvard University, a trustee of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and chief scientist aboard the Atlantis. He served as director of WHOI from 1940-1950, and again in a temporary term from 1956-1958.
