M. K. V. Bappu (1927-1982) studied astronomy at Harvard and discovered the Comet Bappu-Bok Newkirk. His work with O. C. Wilson on the incidence of H & K emission from ionized Calcium led to the postulation of the Wilson-Bappu effect. He worked at Lick Observatory; and was later founder-director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore.
