The American Geophysical Union was organized in 1919 to represent the U.S. in the International Research Council's International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and to serve as the National Research Council Committee on Geophysics. In both of these capacities, the AGU promoted work in the fields of astronomy, geodesy, geology, meteorology, seismology, terrestrial electricity, magnetism and volcanology.
