Established in early 1958, the extradivisional Committee on Polar Research grew out of the Academy's U. S. National Committee for the International Geophysical Year. Following up on the USNA's direction of IGY activities at the North and South Poles, the Committee developed program recommendations for the NSF regarding scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Committee also served as the U. S. National Committee for ICSU's Special (later, Scientific) Committee on Antarctic Research. In 1975, the Committee was reorganized as the Polar Research Board under the National Research Council's Assembly of Mathermatical and Physical Sciences.
