Kanamori, H. (Hiroo), 1936-
Oral history interview with Hiroo Kanamori, 1999 April 19 and 26.
Interview topics include: Kanamori's early life in Japan during World War II; undergraduate and graduate education; work with Chuji Tsuboi on a sea-borne gravity meter, and with Hitoshi Takeuchi on geodynamics and seismological projects; interaction with Charles Richter and Charles Hewitt Dix; his research fellowship at Caltech in 1965; his work at the Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) in Tokyo in 1966, and his arrival at MIT in 1969 to teach and study very large earthquakes; his return to Caltech as full professor in 1972 and his work at the Seismological Lab with Don Anderson and Richter; his continuing work with very large earthquakes and tsunamil; the Mount Saint Helens eruption in 1980 and new interest volcanology; his appointment as directory of the Caltech Seismo Lab; seismic risks of Southern California; establishment of the Earthquake Research Affiliates (later, the Caltech-USGS Broadcast of Earthquakes or CUBE) and other earthquake detection and notification networks.
