Miller, H. (Harold), 1909-
Harold Miller papers and correspondence, 1912-1995.
Biographical material includes obituaries and biographical accounts, papers on Miller's research for his autobiographical account -- Growing up with Primitive Methodism,-- career records, personal diaries, appointment diaries and notebooks, family papers and photographs. There are diaries for the Second World War and immediate post war periods as well as a number of overseas visits later in his career. The notebooks, 1966, 1970-1993, include notes on medical physics overseas technical assistance assignments, the day care unit at Weston Park Hospital and religious community activities. There is a record of Miller's undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Cambridge, mostly notebooks and research reports, and a copy of his PhD thesis. His career at EMI Ltd. is represented by a sequence of Research Dept. Reports, 1934-1942. Lectures and publications material covers the period 1934-1991, and includes a broad range of topics, both professional and general: atomic physics, nuclear weapons, medical physics, pacifism, and science and religion. There are records of his involvement with professional bodies such as the British Institute of Radiology and the Hospital Physicists' Association, the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs.
The largest group of papers relates to Miller's involvement in a number of overseas technical assistance programs. There is substantial documentation of a number of consultancies undertaken by Miller on behalf of the IAEA, the WHO, and the UK ODA. The papers reflect his commitment to the Methodist Church and the importance of a wide range of social, pacifist, and ethical concerns. There are manuscript notes for his sermons as a lay preacher, 1944-1995. General correspondence is slight, but there is some about the pioneer physicist and radiobiologist John Read.
