Brown, Sanborn C. (Sanborn Conner), 1913-1981
Sanborn Conner Brown papers, circa 1818-1982.
The strength of these papers is in four areas: 1) Brown's research in plasma physics and its relation to thermonuclear fusion, his commitment to teaching, international activities, and his studies in the history of science. Of particular interest is correspondence with other scientists concerning plasma physics and its application to nuclear energy. 2) His interest in the teaching of physics is reflected in lectures and writings for academics, as well as secondary school teachers. The papers will shed light on the continuing tension between teaching and research at Dartmouth and other colleges. 3) The collection also documents his relationship with other physicists around the world who did research in plasma physics, as well as a report on a trip to the Soviet Union in 1958, and documents on Soviet scientific instruments. 4) ephermera and photographs relating to Count Rumford. Furthermore, there is correspondence concerning Brown's efforts to encourage history of science studies within the American Institute of Physics.
Physicist (plasma physics, physics education, history of science). Received his A.B. and A.M. in physics from Dartmouth College, and his Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1944. His thesis was on Geiger-Muller counters. He joined the faculty of MIT and spent his entire career there, obtaining the rank of full professor and serving as Associate Dean of the Graduate School. Died 1981.
