Collection includes: 1) manuscript material relating to the book, Face of the Deep; 2) material on Russian nuclear contamination, conference material (1990s); files on seabed disposal of radioactive waste (1980s); 3) material relating to cruise for which Hollister was co-chief scientist, leg 35 of D/V Glomar Challenger for the Deep Sea Drilling Project (1970s).
Charles Davis Hollister (1936-1999) graduated from Columbia University in 1967 with a Ph.D. in geology. He joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in 1967 as an oceanographer/sedimentologist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics. He served the Institution in a number of capacities both scientific and administrative. He was named Senior Scientist in 1979 and was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institutions Joint Program for the years 1979 -1989. In 1989 he accepted appointment as WHOIs Associate Director for External Affairs and in the same year was appointed Vice President of the Corporation.
