Snow, C. P. (Charles Percy), 1905-1980
C. P. Snow collection, 1931-1980.
Within the C.P. Snow collection are holograph manuscripts, typescripts, notebooks, and page proofs of Snow's novels, plays, articles, book reviews, lectures, speeches, radio broadcasts, and essays; correspondence; diaries; clippings; and business papers, such as bank statements, checks, papers regarding investments, royalty statements, and insurance policies, including libel insurance. Also present in the collection are proceedings, reports, and correspondence of the English Electric Company, the House of Lords, and other agencies, as well as manuscripts by Christopher Aston, William Cooper, Leonard Mosley, Harvey Curtis Webster, and other authors.
Included are manuscripts from Snow's entire writing career. All eleven novels in the "Strangers and Brothers" series are represented in the collection. In addition to manuscripts of each novel are a 1945 statement of intentions and plans regarding the series, a list identifying the people on whom characters in the series are based, a 1970 typescript titled "The Story of 'Strangers and Brothers,'" Julian Bond's proposed television treatment of "Strangers and Brothers," and a notebook of Snow's comments on the television treatment. Among other book-length manuscripts are Snow's detective novel A Coat of Varnish (1979); his biography of Anthony Trollope, Trollope: His Life and Art (1975); a fragment of an early version of In Their Wisdom (1974), then titled The Onlookers; and a synopsis of Snow's last book, The Physicists: A Generation that Changed the World (1981). Some notebooks also contain manuscripts by Snow's wife, Pamela Hansford Johnson. Snow's holograph manuscript and revised typescript of his Cambridge University Rede Lecture of 1959, "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution," are present. Manuscripts of over fifty other lectures and speeches include Snow's Godkin Lecture, "Science and Government," "The Hospital As a Humane Institution," and "The Brain Drain."
Book reviews, essays, radio broadcasts, and articles are also part of the collection. The majority of the book reviews were written for the Financial Times. Several versions of Snow's article "The Case of Leavis and the Serious Case" are present. Among manuscripts of Snow's plays are "View over the Park," "Nights Around," and, with William Gerhardie, "The Fool of the Family."
Correspondence with approximately 6000 different correspondents includes over 8000 letters written to Snow and about 7000 letters written by Snow to literary, scientific, and political figures. Also included is correspondence with publishers, such as Scribners and Faber and Faber; agents, in particular Graham Watson of Curtis Brown Ltd., and broadcasting companies, such as the British Broadcasting Company. Major correspondents include Jacques Barzun, William Cooper (Harry S. Hoff), J.H. Plumb, S. Gorley Putt, Jean Queval, and Harvey Curtis Webster; there is also extensive correspondence with the British Council, Churchill College, and Westminster Bank.
Items in the miscellaneous series include datebooks and diary sheets, an address book, financial papers, agreements with publishers, and clippings. Letters of congratulation on the occasion of Snow's knighthood in 1957, correspondence regarding Snow's Godkin Lecture, and correspondence and clippings about F.R. Leavis are present. In addition, the proceedings of the Pugnash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (1963-64); minutes, financial reports, correspondence, and reports of the English Electric Company and the Overseas Development Institute; and official reports, standing orders, and guides of the House of Lords are included. Also in the series are Pamela Hansford Johnson's bibliography and correspondence, including about 250 letters of condolence after the death of C.P. Snow. Among manuscripts by other authors are typescripts by Christopher Aston, P.M.S. Blackett, William Cooper, Ronald Millar, and Harvey Curtis Webster.
