Livingston, M. Stanley (Milton Stanley)
M. Stanley Livingston papers, 1928-1986.
The collection consists of correspondence, glass slides, photographs, and reports about the design and construction of accelerators and cyclotrons at Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cornell University, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Cambridge Electron Accelerator. Records about the 45th anniversary of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in 1976, and the 50th anniversary in 1981 are also included. Correspondence, lectures, and reprints document Livingston's histories of accelerators, cyclotrons, physics, and the use of nuclear technology. Also includes letters of recommendation Livingston wrote, 1970-1974.
Milton Stanley Livingston, 1905-1986, B.A. 1926, Pomona College; M.A. 1928, Dartmouth College; Ph.D. 1931, University of California, Berkeley, worked with E.O. Lawrence at Berkeley from 1931 to 1934 on the development of the cyclotron. He then taught at Dartmouth and Cornell before joining the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1938. He became assistant professor in 1939, associate professor in 1942, and professor in 1952. He was in charge of the design, development, and construction of the Institute's first cyclotron and conducted research on its use as a source of radioactive materials during World War II. In 1956 he was appointed the first director of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, built under his supervision by MIT and Harvard. He was also chairman of the Accelerator Project at Brookhaven National Laboratory, 1946-1948, and associate director of the National Accelerator in Batavia, Illinois, 1967-1970.
