Scottish physicist. Born in Jedburgh and studied at Edinburgh University. His researches into the properties of light led to great improvement in the illumination of lighthouses. In 1816 he invented the kaleidoscope. Originated the British Association, along with Davy, Herschel, and Babbage in 1831.
