Meteorologist. Educated at Edinburgh University and was appointed an observer at the magnetical and meteorological observatory at Uakerstoun, under John Allan Broun (1917-1879) F. R. S. 1853. and he held this appointment from 1842-1850. Then appointed assistant at Kew Observatory 1950 under Sir Francis Ronalds (1788-1873) F. R. S. 1844 and succeeded him. F. R. S. 1857.
