The Danish society was founded by Hans Christian O/rsted in 1824 for the purpose of "spreading knowledge about experimental science, the mechanical part as well as the chemical part". Promotion of this purpose has been done in various ways as seen to be required by the developments of time. The society continues to hold lecture evenings with invited speakers, and has in the past, among other things, given support to vocational schools and schools for further education, helped students at technical colleges, organized courses in practical physics and astronomics demonstrations for secondary school pupils. As these activities were taken over by other institutions, the society changed course. It now organises lectures in physics and chemistry and publishes the Danish scientific journal "Kvant", 1990- (formerly, "Fysisk Tideskrift", 1902-1989). The society has a prize, the O/rsted Medal (founded 1908), awarded to prominent Danish scientists.
