Milo Woodbridge Williams papers, 1914-2000.
The accession includes over 1,000 original negatives, hundreds of photographic slides and prints, transparencies, and papers of "Woody" Williams. The collection consists largely of photographic negatives, prints and slides taken at SIO by Williams in 1947 and 1948, including images of work at sea, social events, photographs of marine life and marine environments, and photographs of individuals. The collection includes photographs of Samuel Stillman Berry, Brian Boden, Wesley Coe, Gifford Ewing, Denis Fox, Samuel Hinton, Joel Hedgepeth, Carl Hubbs, John Isaacs, Douglas Inman, Martin Johnson, Karl Kenyon, Roger Revelle, Marston Sargent, Francis Shepard, Robert Wisner and others. Most photographs are in black and white, but there are some color transparencies. The accession includes some images taken of marine biologists and work at sea undertaken by other oceanographic institutions including the Hancock Foundation, UCLA, the California Academy of Sciences and a few private individuals. The accession includes photographs and descriptions of the voyages of M.S. STRANGER owned by Fred E. Lewis during the period 1934-1937 when it was used for cruises by the sea scouts. Williams' papers include letters, journals and other material describing voyages of M.S. STRANGER, especially the 1937 cruise to Alaska. The accession includes a few photographs dated 1914 which were taken by Hazel Schreiber and show scenes in Inverness, Point Reyes and Drakes Bay. Ms. Schreiber gave her original negatives to Williams. The accession includes a small quantity of biographical information on Williams and a small quantity of correspondence describing his career as a nature photographer.
"Woody" Williams, a professional photographer who was a graduate student and laboratory technician at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from January 1947 to February 1948.
