Princeton University Department of Physics records, 1909-1971.
The records of the Physics Department document the scientific and teaching activities of Princeton University physicists from 1909-1962. While routine activities such as the hiring of faculty and the education of graduate and undergraduate students are recorded, these records also detail the Department's activities in early studies of theoretical physics, as well as its participation in World War II research activities. Includes materials on or by Rudolph Ladenburg, Walker Bleakney (see Series 3, Technical Reports), Allen Shenstone, Henry D. Smyth, and Eugene Wigner. Also includes materials by E. U. Condon, P. A. M. Dirac (lecture notes), Princeton's Bicentennial in 1946-47, and documentation on the Palmer Laboratory. Types of documents include correspondence, financial records, minute books, personnel records, publications, technical reports, examinations and course notes.
The Physics Department began as part of the Engineering School, but became an independent department in 1929 and began an association with the university's Institute for Advanced Study in 1930.
