Bradner, Hugh, 1915-2008
Hugh Bradner papers, 1935-1988.
Collection 82-73 (1935-1981) consists largely of lecture notes, problem sets and solutions, examinations and other course material gathered by Bradner while teaching courses in physics and science at University of California at San Diego (UCSD). The courses include: Elementary Application of Mechanics and Dynamics; Physics-Mechanics and Math Analysis.
Collection 82-57 (1935-1988) consists of memoranda, student notes, lecture notes, research notes, appointment calendars, speeches, committee files and other papers which document Bradner's work on diving, diving instrumentation and the physiology of divers. Subject files include: Brobeck, General Atomic, MACI, MACII, Miami University, Monopoles, NRI, and Physics.
Collection 2001-07 (1941-1988) consists of subject files on instruments, people, and research projects, and drafts and correspondence concerning Bradners publications.
Collection 97-19 (1946-1986) consists mainly of Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrion Detectors (DUMAND) material. The accession also includes slides and photographs, bibliographies, publications, reports, and subject files on Brobeck, General Atomic, MACI, MACII, Miami University, Monopoles, and NRI.
Collection 82-86 (1951-1981) consists of subject files, correspondence, notes, and photographs.
Collection 82-67 (1969-1982) includes material on the National Science Foundation International Phase of Ocean Drilling (IPOD) Science Blue Ribbon Panel. It also includes copies of NSF IPOD Deep Sea Drilling Program Reviews, material on the DUMAND (Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrino Detection) Working Group, the Geophysical Institute Advisory Committee, and correspondence concerning Bradner's patent and application for patents for a suntan cream.
Collection 87-11 (photographs, 1962-1976) includes photographs and slides documenting dives, instruments, Hawaii, earthquake observations (including graphs and charts), the Revelle house at Scripps College, and the musical Endless Holiday. Many of the slides were used by Bradner in his lectures.
American physicist. Ph.D., California Institute of Technology (1941). Worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1943-1961); studied high-energy physics at University of California, Berkeley (1946-1961), where he invented the wetsuit for divers; worked as geophysicist and professor at the Scripps Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics from 1961-1980.
