Educated for the Church of Scotland at Edinburgh University, but due to a form of nervousness gave up a clerical life and in 1802 became editor of the 'Edinburgh Magazine.' From 1801 to 1807 he acted as a tutor. F. R. S. 1815. Copley medallist Royal Society 1815. Rumford medallist R. S. 1818 and Royal Medallist R. S. 1830. Invented the kaleidoscope 1816. He wrote an enormous amount on scientific subjects of all kinds. Knighted 1831 and received a pension. Principal of St. Salvators and St. Leonards at St. Andrews 1838. Chancellor of Edinburgh University, 1859-1868.
