Young, James, 1811-1883.
James Young papers, 1830-1960.
Includes: A. Diaries and notebooks; correspondence; patents and legal cases; financial papers; technical and scientific notes including articles and lecture notes (most of which are by James Young); newspaper cuttings; miscellanea, additional (post 1883) material. B. As manager of chemical works near Liverpool (1839) and near Manchester (1843), he discovered cheaper methods of producing sodium stannate and potassium chlorate; and it was his experiments (1847-1850) that led to the manufacture of Paraffin Oil (Kerosene) and solid Paraffin on a large scale. Young was also a great friend of the missionary and explorer David Livingston and helped to fund his second and third expeditions.
Scottish industrialist chemist, born in Glasgow, who was a joiner and studied chemistry, etc. at Anderson's college (now the Univrsity of Strathclyde). He became Thomas Graham's assistant there (1832) and (1837) in University College, London.
