Curran, Samuel C. (Samuel Crowe), 1912-
Samuel C. Curran papers, 1951-1986.
Includes: Part A: research papers (1951-1958; mainly on nuclear physics and radioactivity); published works ("Counting Tubes: Theory and Applications" 1949, "Luminescence and the Scintilation Counter" 1953 and "Energy and Human Needs" 1979, lectures articles and related correspondence. Part B: Manhattan Project (Ministry of Supply), University of California, 1944-1945 (invention of scintillation counter, 1944). Natural Philosophy, Glasgow University, 1945-55; United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1955-1958; chief scientist, Atomic Weapon Research Establishment, Aldersmaston, Berks, 1958-1959; Principal of the Royal College of Science and Technology and the University of Strathclyde, 1960-1980.
Obtained research degrees in Physics from Cambridge and Glasgow Universities and was made Fellow of the Royal Society in 1953. His originality as a scientist contributed to the war effort in both Britain and the United States, while the scintillation detector and the modern proportional tube were his major personal inventions. After the war he was Chief Scientist at the United Kingdom Atomic Engergy Authority, Aldermaston. As Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) he took the lead in developing Britain's first technological university.
