The Belfast Natural History Society (after 1842, the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society) was founded in 1821 for the cultivation of that science in its various brances and more especially for the investigation of the natural history of Ireland. In 1831 the Society formally opened new premises in the Belfast Museum in College Square North, the first museum ever erected in Ireland by voluntary subscription.
