Radcliffe Observatory. 1772-1935.
Radcliffe Observatory records, 1753-1908.
Large archive of scientific records of the Observatory and of its Observers and assistants, mostly astronomical observations, but also including general notes, papers relating to instruments, and a small amount of correspondence. The collection is strongest in the earlier period, and contains much material of Hornsby and his contemporaries. Of the assistants whose work is represented, the most important are the observations of Norman R. Pogson, 1850s. Correspondents include the instrument makers Sir Howard Grubb, William Hardy, Thomas Jones, B. L. Vulliamy; other correspondents include Lord Aylesford, Sir David Brewster, John Russell (the artist).
The Radcliffe Observatory was established by the Radcliffe Trustees, and until 1839 it was used by Oxford University's astronomy professors. It remained the chief observatory in Oxford until its removal to South Africa in 1935. It owed its origin largely to the efforts of the 18th-century astronomy and physics professor Thomas Hornsby. Radcliffe Observers in charge of the Observatory after Hornsby were: Abraham Robertson, S. P. Rigaud, M. J. Johnson, Richard Main, E. J. Stone, A. A. Rambaut, and Harold Knox-Shaw.
