Physicist, experimental mechanic, electrical engineer, and inventor; Fellow of the Royal Society; established the Millard Laboratory at Trinity College, Oxford, 1885, and was University Lecturer in Mechanics, 1888-1908. His inventions included the liquid microphone (1879) and the tram chronograph (1888), the latter used in measuring high-speed events such as explosions and gunshots. His work supplemented Oxford's physics teaching, and laid the foundations of its Engineering Science school.
