Joseph Sweetman Ames papers, 1888-1968.
This collection consists largely of materials relating to Joseph Sweetman Ames's work at the Johns Hopkins University. Included are copies of lectures notes (1918-1923) for courses he gave at Hopkins on electricity, mechanics, thermodynamics, and relativity (probably one of the earliest given on this topic). Also included are notes (1888) taken by Ames during lectures on light by Henry Rowland and speeches given by Ames while president of Hopkins.
Physicist, professor (1891-1926) and president (1929-1935) of The Johns Hopkins University, and chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. B.A. and Ph.D. (1890), Johns Hopkins University. Studied with Helmholtz at the University of Berlin (1886-1887) and studied spectroscopy with Henry Rowland, then succeeded Rowland as director of the Johns Hopkins Physical Laboratory in 1901.
