Born in Austria. Interested in mathematics and applied mechanics. He taught at the University of Brno (1908-09); Univeristy of Strasbourg (1909-18); Univeristy of Frankfurt (1918-19); University of Dresden (1919-1920); University of Berlin (1920-33); University of Istanbul (1933-39); and Harvard University (1939-1953).
