Collection consists of general (1904-1913), departmental (1902-1913) and subject file (1900-1913) correspondence of deans Stephen A. Forbes (1900-1905) and Edgar J. Townsend (1905-1913), including correspondence and reports concerning university statutes and organizations, Council of Administration, committees, budget requests, correspondence with Katherine Sharp, F. W. Drury, and Phineas Windsor regarding library acquisitions and book funds for the College of Science (1905-1913), buildings and remodeling, departmental headships, faculty appointments and publications, academic requirements, scholarships, graduate work at Gottingen and Yale, honorary degrees, registration, lectures and related subjects.
The dean's office of the college of liberal arts and sciences was formed in 1913, when the college of literature and the arts and the college of science were combined. The primary duties of the dean are that of chief executive officer of the college and agent of the college faculty for the execution of the college educational policy. Under the dean are the four schools (life sciences, humanities, social sciences, and chemical sciences) and 75 fields of study which comprise the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
