The collection dates from the 1876, the early years of Ohio State University when physics was established as one of the first departments, to 2009. As of 2017, the Department of Physics was operating at Ohio State University in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Founded in 1870 as a land-grant university, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1878, the college changed its name to the Ohio State University. Research facilities include Aeronautical/Astronautical Research Laboratory, Byrd Polar Research Center, Electroscience Laboratory, and the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT, originally named the Columbus Project).
