Martin J. Buerger papers, 1910-1985.
The collection contains some biographical material about Buerger; notebooks from his student days at MIT; and lecture notes from classes he taught at MIT. There is correspondence with professional colleagues and organizations, and records of his consulting activities. Some of his research is documented in notes on lattices, space groups, symmetry, and other topics. The bulk of the collection consists of manuscripts of his books, including drafts of chapters for an unfinished book on image and space; reprints of his articles, including a bibliography of his publications; and correspondence and other material about his editorial work for the journal Zeitschrift fur Kristallographie.
Martin Julian Buerger, 1903-1986, S.B. in mining engineering, 1925, Ph.D. in geology, 1929, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, became assistant professor of mineralogy and petrography at MIT in 1929, associate professor in 1935, professor in 1944, and Institute Professor in 1956. He established and directed an x-ray diffraction laboratory where he invented many instruments and pioneered analytical methods for crystal-structure analysis. Buerger's theories to explain numerous crystal properties and behavior were published in ten major textbooks and more than 230 articles.
