Auerbach, Felix, 1856-1933

Sixteen volumes of diaries, 1876-1891, written in Gabelsberger shorthand, dealing with personal, political, and scientific topics. Correspondence and personal and family memorabilia. Letter by Elizabeth M. Lunau providing biographical information on Felix Auerbach and the fate of his family in the Third Reich; printed portrait of Felix Auerbach, by Edvard Munch (1906); article "Jena als Kunststadt" referring to the aforementioned portrait of Auerbach by Munch. Booklet about "Haus Auerbach," a house built for Felix and Anna Auerbach by Walter Gropius in 1924.
German physicist. Born in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) on November 12, 1856. Auerbach received a doctorate in physics at Heidelberg in 1875, and was named professor of physics at Jena in 1889, where he committed suicide on February 26, 1933, together with his wife Anna (nee Silbergleit).
