Slater, John C, (John Clarke), 1900-1976.
John Clarke Slater papers, 1908-1976.
This large collection includes extensive correspondence, scientific notes and notebooks, research material, and typescripts and manuscripts of books and articles. There is also material relating to his childhood (school papers, reports, journals, etc.). Although there is professional material prior to 1935, the bulk of the collection dates after this time.
There is much on the development of physics at M.I.T., and Slater's post-1966 work at the University of Florida. There are about 133 research notebooks, 1944-1976 (7 linear ft.), and a long series (30 linear ft.) of folders, containing a variety of material such as lectures, scientific notes, drafts of manuscripts and papers. There are also folders containing such material as his correspondence during his collaboration with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, 1966-1970, and extensive correspondence relating to the National Academy of Sciences. Information about American-Swedish exchange in quantum science is to be found in the correspondence with Per Olov Lw̲din. Correspondents include: Leland C. Allen, Stanley S. Ballard, Michael P. Barnett, A. Michael Boring, Vannevar Bush, William M. Clark, Enrico Cleminti, Arthur H. Compton, Karl Compton, Edward U. Condon, John W. D. Connolly, C. A. Doulson, Karl K. John Clarke Slater was a physicist. He graduated from Harvard (Ph.D. 1923) and continued his studies at Cambridge University. He also studied in Copenhagen for six months under Niels Bohr, with whom Slater worked again in 1929 on quantum theory. He returned to the United States in 1930 to become head of the department of physics at M.I.T., where he worked with Karl Compton to transform the study of physics there.
