Morrill, Justin S. (Justin Smith), 1810-1898.
Justin S. Morrill papers, 1828-1898.
Correspondence (chiefly letters written to Morrill), Congressional bills, acts, and speeches, notes, clippings, pamphlets, and papers relating to Morrill's personal life in Vermont. The papers cover primarily the period (1855-1898) when Morrill was a U. S. Representative and Senator from Vermont, and reflect Morrill's interest in the tariff, in buildings and grounds in Washington, D.C. and in the land-grant colleges. The papers on trade and the tariff include statistics on Hawaiian trade (1860-1869) prepared by Francis Amasa Walker, and material on wool production in the U. S. and on the impingements on trade of the monetary policies of the U. S. Includes several items relating to Morrill's association with Cyrus W. Field and John E. Ward over the proposed cable to China (ca. 1870); correspondence (1878) with Joseph Wharton, chairman of the Executive Committee of the Industrial League of Philadelphia, concerning the organization of a congressional committee, headed by Morrill, to investigate customs duties, and the placing of a resolution for such before Congress; and letters (1894) from U. S. and English astronomers in criticism of the U. S. Naval Observatory in Washington, which were submitted by Morrill to the Senate in an effort to reorganize the Observatory. Names of persons significant to the collection include Portus Baxter, Seth Carlo Chandler, Erastus Fairbanks, Solomon Foot, William Lawrence, Byron Sunderland, Aldace Freeman Walker, and Charles Wesley Willard.
