Contains material on Mauna Kea Observatory: 1) Correspondence folders titled Department of Planning and Economic Development--Mauna Kea Observatory (inclusive dates 1964-1972). The bulk of the correspondence deals with the establishment of the Mauna Kea observatory site and concerns the construction of the access road leading up to the observatory site and other infrastructure improvements. Very few of the letters discuss the scientific use of Mauna Kea as a lunar observation site. The bulk of the correspondents are state government department heads, Hawaii County officials, special interest groups, local elected officials, community organizations, and business people. The files contain a few letters from federal government officials, James E. Webb, and other NASA administrators, Dr. Donald Munzel of the Harvard College Observatory, Harold L. Johnson and Gerard P. Kuiper of the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. 2) Correspondence folders titled UH: Mauna Kea Observatory--French Telescope (inclusive dates 1972-1973). The bulk of the correspondence deals with the political arrangements between Hawaii, Canada, France, and the U. S. governments to use Mauna Kea for scientific purposes. None of the letters provide scientific discussion of the use of Mauna Kea as a lunar observation site. Includes copies of notes and status reports relating to political arrangements between Hawaii and the governments of Canada, France, and the United States, articles relating to the observatory site, news releases, the Memorandum of Understanding among The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique of France, the National Research Council of Canada, and the University of Hawaii. Correspondents include former Governor John A. Burns, former University of Hawaii president Harlan Cleveland, Attorney General of Hawaii, Hawaii's Congressional delegation, University of Hawaii Board of Regents, U. S. Department of State officials, and National Research Council of Canada officials.
