Raymond Compton Dearle collection, 1915-1971.
Collection consists of general correspondence of Professor Dearle as Head of the Physics Department at the University of Western Ontario, 1915-1949, 1957, 1966; correspondence with senior staff of the University of Western Ontario, 1919-1947; wartime research and training, 1939-1943, n.d.; minutes, faculty of the University College of Arts, 1925-1945; obituary, Raymond Compton Dearle, 1971; and wallpaper samples, 1939. The fonds also contains photographs of radio technicians' courses at University of Western Ontario, London, Ont., 1941-1942; and radio physics class, 1949.
Dr. Raymond Compton Dearle, physicist, was born in Simcoe, Ont. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto, receiving his B.A. in 1914 and Ph.D. in 1919, his dissertation topic being "Emission and Absorption Spectra of Mercury, Zinc and Cadmium". On completion of his Ph.D. he became Head of the new physics department at the University of Western Ont. in London. He held this position from 1919 to 1949, while doing significant work in radiophysics. During the Second World War Dearle placed his department on a war footing; in co-operation with the National Research Council he directed a team which undertook research in the field of radio and radar, and he was instrumental in establishing special course at Western to train radio specialists for the Armed Forces. An obituary by his successor Dr. A.D. Misener is included in the papers.
