George Walter Stewart papers, 1899-1955.
The George W. Stewart papers include correspondence, speeches, memoirs, and reprints of Stewart's published articles. This material primarily reflects his professional activities in the field of physics. Some family photographs are included in a manuscript about the life of Stewart's father, who was a Methodist minister. Correspondence with his brother, Oscar Stewart, who was also a physicist, as well as a manuscript and scrapbook on Stewart's father, a Methodist clergyman in Missouri. Correspondents include Harold C. Urey.
Physicist (acoustics). Ph.D., Cornell University (1901). George W. Stewart was an assistant in Cornell's physics department from 1899 to 1901 and served as instructor from 1901 to 1903. He served as assistant professor and professor of physics at the University of North Dakota from 1903 to 1909. Stewart established the Iowa Colloquium of College Physicists in 1936, which attracted prominent scientists such as Erwin Schrodinger, Niels Bohr and H. Lorentz. Stewart was named a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1938. In 1942 he was the recipient of the Oersted Medal for Notable Contributions to the Teaching of Physics, awarded by the American Association of Physics Teachers.
