Education Development Center
Education Development Center records, 1957-1971.
The collection is a partial record of some of the major activities of the Educational Services Inc. (ESI), Physical Sciences Study Committee (PSSC), and Education Development Center (EDC) in the areas of curriculum development, and educational reform; the ESI and PSSC records are grouped together. The ESI portion of the collection consists almost entirely of the records of the development of the PSSC Physics course and the Introductory Physics Science (PS) course, and the implementation of both courses in American and foreign schools. The PSSC material consists primarily of drafts of the PSSC Physics text (1958), laboratory guide and teachers guide; correspondence and commentary concerning the material is included. The EDC records, most of which appear to be from the files of Marc S. Tucker, secretary of the EDC (1969), consist of administrative records, including material on the merger between the IEI and ESI; public relations material; minutes of Board of Trustees meetings, 1968-1979; and administrative correspondence and memoranda. There are small amounts of material from the Committee on Operations, the Publications Committee and the EDC library; also included are correspondence, reports and contracts with the United States Office of Education, primarily concerning EDC's Pilot Communities Program. Records document the writing, revision and implementation of PSSC Physics and Introductory Physical Science.
The Physical Science Study Committee (PSSC) was formed in 1956 to develop a new physics curriculum for high schools. The project was initiated by Jerrold Zacharias, James Killian, and Francis Friedman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; they formed the steering committee with I.I. Rabi, Edwin D. Land, Nathaniel H. Frank, Martin Deutsch, and others. With a grant from the National Science Foundation a preliminary edition of PSSC Physics (1958) was completed. The PSSC materials included a Laboratory Guide and a Science Study Series, which provided supplemental reading to the course. The project included summer in-service institutes to train teachers in the use of the new curriculum. In December 1958, Education Services Incorporated (ESI) was formed to take over the administration of PSSC, including overseeing publication of the first commercial edition of PSSC Physics (1960) by the D.C. Heath Company. ESI then undertook other projects to improve educational programs and in 1967 merged with the Institute for Educational Innovation (IEI), which had been established under Title IV of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act, to form the Education Development Center (EDC). EDC was involved in many large-scale projects aimed at educational reform.
