Ernst Cloos papers, 1922-1974.
The collection includes manuscripts and printed papers by Cloos (1922-1973); maps, chiefly of the Appalachian mountains; over 200 letters to and from Cloos (1953-1969), over 100 technical articles by Cloos in manuscript and printed form, and research notes for articles concerning contours, fracture patterns, lineation, microtechnics, structure, and related topics; together with reports, research trip outlines, field notes, maps, drawings, diagrams, and Cloos's books, Lineation, a Critical Review and Annotated Bibliography (1946) and Microtechtonics Along the Western Edge of the Blue Ridge, Maryland and Virginia (1971). Some materials are in German.
Ernst Closs (1898-1974), a structural geologist, was born in Germany and educated at the University of Breslau. He conducted various geologic investigations in Europe and the Middle East before settling permanently in the United States. Cloos became a lecturer in structural geology at Johns Hopkins in 1931 and became Professor in 1941. He was Chairman of the Geology Department from 1951 to 1963 and retird from Johns Hopkins in 1968. Cloos specialized in microstructural analysis and made an important contribution to the study of the geology of the of geology of the Appalachian Mountains. He served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1953.
