Beno Gutenberg papers, 1916-1959.
The Beno Gutenberg papers include personal, Caltech related, and professional correspondence; government and technical files, data pads and notebooks, reprints, and biographical and personal material. Series 2, Correspondence and Documents-Caltech, contains documents of the Division of Geological Sciences, especially files and reports. Series 3, Correspondence and Documents Professional Organizations and Meetings, contains correspondence with the main American Geophysical Union, National Academy of Sciences, the Seismological Society of America. Series 6, United States Government Files, includes, among others, files on the Geophysical Research Directorate, on the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey and reports on microseisms and hurricanes. Series 8, Unprocessed Technical Material, contains miscellaneous data, seismograms and reprints, reports and International Seismological Summaries. Series 8 also includes selected copies from Gutenberg's papers in German repositories. Correspondents include W. Hiller (1952); the German Geophysical Society, regarding awarding the Emil Wiechert Medal to Gutenberg (1956-1957); the German Physical Society (1924-1931); miscellaneous (1927); Royal Geological Society, London (1954); Institut de Physique du Globe, Strasbourg, France (1915-1916); and colleagues at the University of Frankfurt (1924-1939). Biographical files include a personal dossier from the University of Frankfurt (1924-1930); photographs and a copy of student roster of Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt (1907); a Gutenberg dossier from the Prussian Ministry of Science, Art and Culture covering his years at the University of Frankfurt (1924-1930); biographical material on Gutenberg and family from the Stadtsarchiv, Darmstadt; and an obituary of Gutenberg, 1960. Also course lists from the University of Frankfurt (1925-1930); Kuratorium files, University of Frankfurt (1924-1930); and student records, University of Gttingen, specifically in regard to doctoral promotion and dissertation (1911). Collection also contains documents on the B'nai Brith (1920, 1922, 1932) about Jewish identity and problems of antisemitism.
