Hans Eduard Suess papers, 1875-1989.
The majority of the papers date from 1955 through 1977, the years when Suess was professor of Geochemistry at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The papers contain extensive correspondence with international scientists and include a comprehensive collection of Suess' writings, both published and in manuscript form.Correspondence with prominent scientists and UCSD faculty, including Gustaf Arrhenius, Werner Heisenberg, Hans Jensen, Maria Goeppert Mayer, Roger Revelle, William Nierenberg, Leo Szilard, and Harold Urey.
Ph.D. (chemistry, 1935) University of Vienna. Geochemist and founding faculty member of University of California, San Diego, Seuss (1909-1993) had been research chemist, Hamburg, 1930s and had taken part in the German government's unsuccesful program to develop nuclear weapons during World War II. He immigrated to the U. S. after the war and worked for the U. S. Geological Survey, the University of Chicago, and as professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego (chemical kinetics, nuclear hot atom chemistry, cosmic abundances of nuclear species, nuclear shell structure, geologic age determinations and carbon-14 dating). Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1965.
