C. C. Furnas addition to papers, 1914-1969.
Twelve volumes of personal papers (15,200 pages), includes correspondence, notes, speeches, articles, fiction, and autobiographical material. Compiled and edited by Sparkle Moore Furnas, his wife, the volumes are: Addresses--Articles and Miscellaneous Messages (8 volumes), comprised of notes; outlines; speeches; letters; book reviews; introductions; papers; and articles, many of which have been published previously. These reflect the occupations and intersts of Furnas, including chemical engineering, aeronautical research, the roles of science and research in society, higher education, and American missile development. Inputs and Overtones, subtitled Inputs and Overtones Which Influenced the Life of Clifford C. Furnas (1 volume), contains autobiographical information, reminiscences, statements, letters, and memoranda for the record. Much of this material pertains to Furnas's involvement with the University of Buffalo, which later became the State University of New York at Buffalo. Also included are a few items relating to his work as Director of the Curtiss-Wright and Cornell Aero-nautical Research Labortories, and to his role in Project Vanguard as an Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Development. Tramps (1926), an unpublished book (1 volume) by Furnas and illustrated by Mrs. Furnas, recounts a trip taken to Yellowstone Park in the summer of 1925. Olympus (1928) is an unpublished novel (1 volume) by Furnas. The last volume, entitled Unpublished Manuscripts, includes an anthology of favorite poems, compositions, book reviews, stories, and articles written by Dr. Furnas from 1914-1945.
