Auburn University Department of Physics records, 1947-1967.
This collection consists of subject and correspondence files which date from 1947-1966. The subject files are arranged alphabetically and include administrative materials concerning the internal structure of the physics department such as the curriculum and faculty. Also included are materials concerning external organizations, agencies, and conferences with which the physics department was involved. A major portion of the collection consists of correspondence files which are arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically by the surname of the recipient or sender. A large percentage of these files consists of correspondence sent and received by professors Fred Allison and Howard Carr who were both heads of the department. These correspondence files date from 1947-1964.
The physics department at Auburn University was created in conjunction with astronomy in 1882 and did not become a separate entity until 1902.
