Papers include correspondence, teaching files, research and consulting files, professional organizations files, speeches, and publications. Of interest are notes and reports produced by Burwell while serving on the Northwestern U. Science Committee in 1960. The files contain much material documenting Burwell's many trips and speeches; numerious letters of recommendation; visits from overseas scientists; and work with graudate students; refereeing correspondence reflecting Burwell's views on the work and authors in his field during the period 1948-1982. The teaching files include syllabi, problems, exams, and notes for undergraduate courses, mostly in physical chemistry and thermodynamics. Curricular materials are arranged sequentially by course number and files on graduate students and fellows are arranged alphabetically by students' names. Burwell was a frequent consultant and advisor to industrial and government organizations and these files are arranged according to project, research topic, organization or agency. Professional organization files document his activities with the American Chemical Society, the Catalysis Society, the International Congress on Catalysis, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Society. Speeches are arranged by topic and/or title and include notes, drafts, and relative correspondence. His publication files include notes, drafts, correspondence, reprints, and reviews.
