Sommerfeld, Arnold, 1868-1951
Arnold Sommerfeld papers ("New" Sommerfeld Nachlass), 1890-1950.
Correspondence, two diaries (1922-1923 and 1928-1929), and photographs. Materials mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, dealing especially with the impact of Nazi ideology and politics; institutional aspects more than scientific. Correspondents include many famous scientists as well as many unknown. Only to a minor extent is the material relevant to solid state physics. For example, letters on electron theory of metals around 1928 with Edvard Grneisen, Richard Gans, Jaeger, Robert Millikan, Carl Wilhelm Oseen, Friedrich Paschen, Arthur Holly Compton, Karl T. Compton, Thomas C. Mendenhall, and others. Letters exchanged with Peter Paul Ewald, 1915-1916, concerning X-ray diffraction theory.
Physicist (mathematical physics, atomic physics, theoretical physics, wave mechanics, quantum mechanics). On the mineralogy faculty at Georg-August Universitt̃ zu Gt̲tingen (1893-1897); on the mathematics faculty at Technische Universitt̃ Clausthal (1897-1900); on the mechanics faculty at the Technische Hochschule zu Aachen (1900-1906); and on the physics faculty at Universitt̃ M nchen from 1906.
